Richmond Data Center Provides Cavalier with Significant Service Offering Opportunities in Mid-Atlantic Region

RICHMOND, VA – January 25, 2010 – Cavalier, a leading provider of competitive telecommunications services throughout the eastern United States, has acquired the assets of NET Telcos, a Richmond, Virginia-based provider of colocation and managed services. NET Telcos’ SAS 70-certified data center provides more than 4,000 square feet of colocation space and managed services which include server virtualization, data backups, firewalls and e-mail hosting.

“As we grow our mid-market commercial customer base, we see significant demand from corporate IT departments to reduce operating expenses and avoid large capital investments. At the same time, customers face significant requirements for uninterruptable service availability, backup and archiving. We will address these needs by combining a managed services product set from NET Telcos with affordable, reliable connectivity using our extensive fiber network,” said Danny Bottoms, president and CEO of Cavalier.

The NET Telcos acquisition provides a solid platform for Cavalier to expand colocation and managed services offerings to its current customer base in the Mid-Atlantic region. Cavalier’s customers will have the ability to access the managed services provided in the data center, including server colocation and replication, along with several disaster recovery applications.

For existing NET Telcos customers, Cavalier’s extensive voice, data, IP and fiber network infrastructure will provide enhanced connectivity and service options throughout the region. With the ability to leverage a single carrier network, customers will be able to consolidate their services and budgets and allow Cavalier to manage more of their IT network.

“We are committed to providing customers new services which address their evolving business requirements. NET Telcos’ colocation and managed services are the perfect complement to Cavalier’s extensive voice and data networks,” continued Bottoms.

FindYourNerve.com — October 08, 2009 — Some may call it nerve. I call it just doing the right thing. The right thing for the customer, that is. Sounds simple enough but sometimes companies collectively lose sight of that goal when they are trying to navigate through acquisitions, organizational changes and disparate cultures.

My first job as president and CEO of Cavalier was to elevate the customer. Cavalier is the sum of ten different companies through a series of acquisitions. This means Cavalier inherited ten different identities. A common company culture that positively focuses on the customer is paramount in order for a company to be successful.

Change takes nerve. Nerve involves risk. I ask all employees to practice and embrace what I call the ‘Own It’ principle. By owning it, all employees are not only empowered, but expected to be fully accountable for owning any customer interaction. This mindset and activity sets up a culture where organizational silos are broken down and the focus truly is on doing what is best for the customer.

One example of this ‘own it’ risk and reward is when our telesales manager received a misdirected call from a frustrated customer who wanted to cancel because he could not program our TV remote control. He quickly realized he could solve the problem so he left his desk, jumped in his car and drove to the customer’s house to program it for him. Simply by listening to the customer and taking action, he saved the customer in less than one hour and created an example for everyone to follow.

Prior to joining Cavalier, I spent two years in United Arab Emirates working for a pay TV company. Dubai is a fantastic melting pot of people from all over the world. One of the most interesting lessons learned was how the language and cultural differences impacted customer experience. Even with nearly 50 different nationalities working at the company, we struggled every day to meet customer expectations due to their diversity and our own. These differences were both our strength and weakness.

Cavalier focuses on what we do best and tries not to be all things to all people. And that alone takes a lot of collective nerve from an entire organization working together. Often, it is easier to overpromise or mislead to win customers, but by ‘owning it’ we all remember that we are part of the entire solution and accountable to and for the customer. Perhaps that sounds too simple, but it is rarely practiced to perfection, no matter where you are in the world.

Ubiquitous Ethernet Service Delivery Expands Cavalier’s Ability to Seamlessly Support Advanced Applications

HUNTSVILLE, AL — September 30, 2009 — ADTRAN®, Inc., (NASDAQ: ADTN), a leading provider of next-generation access solutions, announced today that Cavalier, a leading provider of competitive telecommunications services throughout the eastern United States, has selected the ADTRAN Total Access® 5000 Multi-Service Access and Aggregation Platform (MSAP) and NetVanta® 800 Series products for its Ethernet offerings.

“The Total Access 5000 Ethernet solution allows us to leverage our infrastructure for the delivery of advanced Ethernet services while guaranteeing Quality of Service (QoS) in the access network,” said Jim Vermeulen, executive vice president of operations, Cavalier. “We required a carrier-class platform with redundancy and a rich portfolio of advanced Ethernet capabilities to offer our business customers. The ADTRAN solution offers all of this in a platform with significant future capacity. When you couple that with ADTRAN’s financial stability and long history of access leadership in our market, the decision was an easy one.”

“The introduction of the Ethernet access solution by Cavalier continues to strengthen our long-term business relationship,” said P. Steven Locke, vice president of sales, service providers, ADTRAN Carrier Networks Division. “Service providers like Cavalier need a logical way to enhance their service offerings while leveraging their installed infrastructure.”

The ADTRAN Total Access 5000 combined with the NetVanta 800 Series family provides a highly scalable end-to-end Ethernet solution. ADTRAN’s Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF)-certified solution provides carriers with a powerful set of traffic management, QoS and measurement capabilities. These features allow carriers to offer flexible SLA-based services to their end-user customers. Inherent in the solution are the necessary resiliency and redundancy features to enable a service provider to offer and support high-availability network performance that business customers expect.

Leading Competitive Carrier Migrates Legacy Switches and Launches IPeer Hosted PBX Service

ALAMEDA, CA, RICHMOND, VA — September 15, 2009 — In a move to leverage its fiber assets and deliver reliable voice over IP services, Cavalier, a leading provider of competitive telecommunications services throughout the eastern United States, selected MetaSwitch to transform its network architecture. With an initial focus on supporting the small and midsize business (SMB) market, Cavalier is leveraging its investment in MetaSwitch to launch hosted PBX and unified communications services under the “IPeer” brand.

“Investing in IP communications is a key element in our ability to respond to our customers’ needs. What really made the business case add up was the ability, with MetaSwitch, to deploy a single platform that would allow us to cap, and in some cases, replace our existing legacy switches and to introduce new services,” said Lou Sommi, senior vice president of marketing at Cavalier. “With our core IP communications platform from MetaSwitch in place, SMBs can enjoy new feature-rich communications while we reduce our costs for operations, administration and maintenance.”

Through this network evolution currently underway, Cavalier is able to use standards-based, IP-oriented infrastructure from MetaSwitch to bring to bear the latest in IP telephony and other feature-rich services in a proven hosted platform. Based on MetaSwitch technology, Cavalier is providing access to the IPeer Hosted PBX platform to SMB customers throughout its mid-Atlantic footprint, with plans to expand further. The MetaSphere Enhanced Application Server is deployed in a central data center and is complemented by nine MetaSwitch MG3510 media gateways deployed throughout the Cavalier service territory. This allows Cavalier’s business customers to have immediate access to new features and applications without the need to update any software or hardware on-site, avoiding the high capital expenditure of premises-based equipment.

Based on the MetaSphere application suite and CommPortal Web services, IPeer puts the customer in control with features that are particularly useful for remote workers who want to manage their calls and enable mobility while working outside of the office. SMBs will also benefit from unified messaging tools including the ability to click-to-dial right from Microsoft Outlook, access advanced voicemail features and manage fax, e-mail and call forwarding through a Web-based portal.

“MetaSwitch is helping carriers to deliver productivity-enhancing services for their subscribers,” said Graeme MacArthur, general manager of MetaSwitch’s Carrier Systems Division. “Our evolutionary approach allows Cavalier to expand the value of its network investment while also increasing revenues with its business customers.”
